Amarillo Reads joins AC to read autobiographyBy Brad Newman The Amarillo Reads communitywide book club has chosen Rick Bragg's memoir “All Over but the Shoutin'" as its fall selection. Amarillo Reads, part of the Celebrate Education program spearheaded by the Amarillo Globe-News and its corporate partners, announced the choice Wednesday. The program is joining with Amarillo College, which chose the same book as its 2008 common reader. “All Over but the Shoutin'," published in 1997, chronicles Bragg's life story, from a boy growing up in the South to his days as a Pulitzer Prize- winning journalist with The New York Times. Bragg will visit Amarillo on Oct. 7 and present a free lecture at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, 500 S. Buchanan St. “The community whose citizens read will be a healthier, stronger and smarter community," Amarillo Mayor Debra McCartt said Wednesday. Olive Ann Burns' novel, “Cold Sassy Tree," was chosen as Amarillo Reads spring selection earlier this year. |
